Everson's Lodge - Northern
Ontario's Premier Fly-In
Fishing Camp
It’s a cool, fresh day. Temperature is in the lower 60’s,
mostly cloudy, slight chop on the lake. It’s a perfect day for
fishing for walleye and northern pike.
And you’re at one of the great spots for walleye and pike
anywhere on earth – Kabinakagami in Northern Ontario. Located
200 miles north of Sault St. Marie, it is smack in the middle
of some of Canada's most beautiful country.
And this is one of the premier fly-in fishing camps –
Everson’s Lodge.
Let me take you on a tour of Everson’s Lodge, Kabinakagami
Lake (Kaby Lake or KB for short), and what to expect on the
fishing trip of a lifetime.
Do you want to fish… or catch fish?
First thing you’re going to ask is “how’s the fishing at
Everson’s Lodge?” After all, if you’re going on a fishing trip,
you want to catch fish, right?
Kaby is 25 miles long and has only four lodges on the entire
lake. (By the way, Everson's is the only lodge located in the
central part of the lake... a great advantage for getting to
some of the prime fishing areas.)
So, there’s way more pike, walleye, perch and whitefish than
anglers to catch them. In a word, the fishing is “awesome” at
Kaby. You can catch fish all day long on most days.
Now, I don’t mean you’ll get a walleye every cast or every
500 yards of trolling. If you’ve done any fishing, you know
that just ain’t gonna happen. Fishing’s fishing, and there are
going to be some of those days. Besides, sometimes the
anticipation makes the catch all that more satisfying.
But, you’ll catch plenty of walleye and northern pike at
Everson’s Lodge. You can count on that. And, you’ll even get a
really big one every now and then. You’ll certainly catch
plenty of 2-3 pound walleye every day. And lots of 4-5 pound
pike as well. But, then, every so often you’ll catch one twice
that size – or even bigger - maybe even a 16 pounder.
So, to answer the oft-asked question…
Do I need a fishing guide?
No! Not at Everson’s. Definitely not. Save your money!
There’s so many fish in the lake, everywhere, you can
practically stumble into them. Especially walleye and pike.
That’s why we’ve gone there since 1978.

Check out the concentration on this angler’s face as he
zeroes in on a big pike. Note the focus and his beady eyes.
This is a fisherman’s fisherman. Think he’s a fishing guide?
Nope, that’s just LeRoy… one of the savviest anglers
around.
When he comes trolling by, walleye head deep for the weeds
and northern’s would rather flop up onto the shore than be
caught by this deadly angler.
Actually, Leroy’s my brother-in-law and best fishing buddy.
He made me say all that other stuff. Plus, he’s our cook on our
fishing trips. Gotta keep the cook happy. But, he does know how
to catch walleye and pike. Check this morning catch out.

But, seriously, you do not need a guide at Kabinakagami.
Walleyes and northern pike are not hard to find or catch. So,
save your money and don't hire a guide.
Here's a couple more pics from a moring session on
Kabainakagami Lake.

And that’s brings me to why a fishing trip is such a great
time. It’s because it’s such a great activity to do with family
and friends.
A fishing trip full of great memories…
Take your fishing buddies, go with Dad, Mom, sons,
daughters, brothers, sisters, brother-in-laws or anyone else
you enjoy being with. It’s the best way to thoroughly enjoy
your fishing trip to Everson’s Lodge, or anywhere else.
My most fond memories are past fishing trips with my Dad,
uncle, brother, and LeRoy. Well, Dad’s gone now and Uncle Ron’s
not in good health but LeRoy and I continue to go. We’ve gone
with just the two of us and also with other friends and
relatives. And it still makes for a great fishing trip.
And, someday, I’ll get my wife to go and I know she’ll enjoy
the great fishing, spectacular scenery, and the peaceful
surroundings.
Everson’s Lodge is located at Windy Point on gorgeous
Kabinakagami Lake. As I said, I’ve been going there since 1978.
In fact, I’ve spent more time in Cabin #4 than anywhere other
than my house.

Everson’s Lodge, while being a remote, fly-in fishing camp,
has practically…
All the conveniences of home…
I’m not a big one on “roughing it”… I just like to fish. So,
what I really like about Everson’s, in addition to the great
walleye and pike fishing, is the accommodations. Everson’s
has:
• Really nice cabins complete with picture window view of
Kaby Lake
• Electricity, thanks to a several generators
• Indoor plumbing complete with shower
• Hot and cold water in the cabins
• Wood burning stove for cold evenings
• Gas range
• Refrigerator and freezer
• Emergency radio phone
Then, we have a well-lit, fully enclosed fish cleaning
building. It has enough room for 4-6 fishermen to clean their
walleye, pike, perch and whitefish.
There’s even running water to hose down the fish cleaning
table when you’re done. And screened-in windows to keep the
bugs out. And a freezer to freeze any fish you want to take
home. It’s a great feature of the camp.
Everson’s Lodge is a housekeeping, fly-in fishing lodge. So,
you need to bring your own groceries. No big deal – just find
out what everyone likes and make a trip to the store. It’ll
save you money over those lodges that charge you an arm and a
leg just to prepare your meals. Plus, you can eat whenever you
want... not when they tell you to be there.

And if you forget something, or use it all up, Richard has a
well-stocked building with staple groceries. Best of all, he
won’t rip you off with high prices because you’re out in the
boonies. He basically just charges what it costs him to bring
it in to the lodge.
How about walleye for breakfast and dinner…
One of the best things about a fly-in fishing trip is the
simple, but oh-so-good walleye meals. Try walleye, American
fried potatoes, and toast for breakfast. And walleye, pike,
potatoes and corn or beans for dinner.
There is no better fish to eat than walleye just caught
earlier in the day. Lightly battered and sautéed, walleye is as
good as it gets. And, ‘ol LeRoy, while he ain’t no French chef,
sure can cook a great fish dinner. Matter of fact, my mouth’s
watering just thinking about it.
The fun is in the fishing – not the catch…
When you go on a fishing trip, you, no doubt, want to catch
fish. Duh? But, as any angler knows, the fun is in the
journey.
We do a lot of trolling at Kabinakagami Lake. Just our
personal preference. One of the main reasons is it’s a great
way to catch fish. But, almost equally important, it enables us
to see all the beautiful shoreline scenery. And the
wildlife.
Trolling lets us cover much more of the lake. In and out of
lots of coves and in and around hundreds of small islands.
Every time you come upon a new location, you’ll find yourself
thinking “this is a great spot for some action.”
No kidding, you’ll say this all week long when you go to
Everson’s. The fishing and scenery just can’t be beat.
But, if the fish are finicky, or we just want to work a
particular spot, we will drop anchor or drift and either cast
or jig. And we will use both artificial lures or live bait.
It's just whatever you think will work or what you want to
do.
Boats and motors…
Trolling and getting around Kaby Lake is a piece of cake.
That’s because Richard Everson has superb 16’ Lund boats with
perfectly matched 9.9 HP motors. His motors are always finely
tuned. Rich and his son Dan make sure of that.
They’re big enough to get you around the lake, but small
enough to troll at a crawl and never miss a beat. That’s
absolutely critical to enjoying and having the most success on
your fishing trip.
So, each morning you just grab a new, full gas tank and off
you go. All the gas you can possibly use is included in your
stay at Everson’s.
You can fish in comfort because every boat has padded,
swivel seats with seat backs. And don’t think that isn’t
important when you’re on the lake for 8, 10 or 12 hours a
day.
Now one of my favorite places to fish at Kabinakagami is
around the small islands between Burnt Island and the Pierrot
islands. Lots of awesome shoreline… well, that’s pretty much
everywhere… and great coves and bays to fish in.
You can get sheltered from the wind if need be and you can
find both rocky bottoms and weedy areas. Walleye and northern
pike love these places.
And in the spring and early summer, we get a lot of action
in Boot Bay. All these great fishing locations are within a 30
minute boat ride. Most are even closer than that. That's one
advantage of the lodge being located in the middle of the Kaby
Lake.
Matter of fact, when all is said and done, all you really
have to do is just go around the corner from the lodge for some
of the best walleye fishing in the lake. We fish there a lot in
the evening or on bad weather days when we want to be closer to
the lodge.
But what all this means is that one of the most fun parts of
the fishing trip is simply moving around the lake to different
areas. This way you get to see just how beautiful it is in
Northern Ontario and since you’re moving, you’re not going to
get bored.

Trust me, every spot looks like the best fishing spot you
ever saw. And, it just may be. The anticipation of big walleyes
at each turn will blow your mind.
One of the best places to catch walleye…
And if it’s the end of a long fishing day and you’re tired
but still want to catch a few more, just fish off from Richie’s
dock. Yup, that’s right. You could catch your limit about every
day right from the dock.
Think I’m making it up. Take a look at these pics and see
what I’m talking about. It’s a fun thing to do late in the day…
or while you might be waiting for the weather to clear or wind
to die down.

Six Reasons Why Everson's Is The Lodge For You...
As you can see, there are many reasons why Everson’s Lodge
has become our favorite fishing camp in Northern Ontario. Here,
in a nutshell, is why I go there every chance I get:
• Awesome fishing for walleye and northern pike
• Comfortable cabins with all the indoor necessities of
home
• Spectacular scenery on one of the most beautiful lakes in
Northern Ontario
• The peace and quite that only comes from being in the
wilderness
• The great service and friendship from Richard Everson and his
staff
• To have the most fun, relaxing week of vacation possible
Not All Fishing Lodges Are Like This
Take it from me. Not all fishing lodges are this good. I
learned the hard way in my first few trips. We went to places
where the fishing wasn't nearly as good as they said it'd be.
The gas lights in the cabin would make you nauseous.
The cabins were barely adequate. And we had a 20 minute boat
ride down a river just to get to the inlet of the lake we
fished.
Don't let that happen to you!
So, if you’re thinking about going on fishing trip, and you
want to have the trip of a lifetime, you owe it to yourself to
book your next trip to Everson’s Lodge.
Book a 3-Day, 4-Day or 7-Day Trip...
While most people prefer the 7-day trip so as to afford the
most time fishing and just plain having fun, you may also book
a three or four day trip. Many people simply can't be gone for
seven days, or choose not to, so the shorter trips fit their
schedule better. The choice is yours.
But, the 7-day trip doesn't cost much more than the shorter
trips, so it's the best value. And it gives you a little buffer
in case you hit a day or two of bad weather.
